Where can you go on your mobility scooter?
Written by Frances Campbell

Our guide to different classes of mobility scooters and where you can use them.
Whether you’re navigating the supermarket aisle, enjoying your local park or heading out on a muddy country trail, your mobility scooter should match your lifestyle, not restrict it. But with so many options, choosing the right mobility scooter can be confusing. Class 2? Class 3? Road legal? Pavement only?
Here’s a breakdown of the different classes of mobility scooters and where you can legally and comfortably use them.
Class 2 Mobility Scooters: Pavement Pros
Top Speed: Up to 4mph
Where You Can Use Them:
✔ Pavements and footpaths
✔ Pedestrian-only zones
✔ Supermarkets, shopping centres, indoor spaces
✖ Not legal for road use (except when crossing the road)
Best For: Everyday use around town, indoor shopping and public transport-friendly travel.
These scooters are nimble, compact, and easy to store. If your life is mostly city-based or you need something you can fold up and pop in the boot, Class 2 is your go-to. Think of them as the urban commuter of the scooter world: efficient, no-nonsense, and ready to roll.
The Supersmith 3Scooter is a Class 2 Mobility Scooter with additional benefits. It suits urban environments, but it can also handle short grass, sharp hills, wood chip paths, and slopes.
Supersmith Tip: Look for models with tight turning circles and good battery range — perfect for weaving through busy pavements like Christmas markets. The 3Scooter is also great for indoor spaces - navigate shop doorways with ease and reach shelves ordinarily out of reach with our height-adjustable seat.
Class 3 Mobility Scooters: Road-Ready Explorers
Top Speed: Up to 8mph (with a 4mph setting for pavement use)
Where You Can Use Them:
✔ Roads (except motorways, cycle lanes, and bus lanes)
✔ Pavements (at reduced speed)
✔ Public and private paths
Best For: Longer journeys, rural areas and people who need to cover more ground without compromising on comfort.
Class 3 scooters are built for big days out. They come with added features like headlights, indicators, mirrors and a horn — all things you need for safe road use. These are the SUV of mobility scooters: sturdy, powerful, and capable of tackling uneven terrain and kerbs with ease.
Important: You don’t need a driving licence to use a Class 3 scooter, but you do need to register it with the DVLA. No tax or insurance is legally required, though we always recommend insurance for peace of mind.
Supersmith Tip: Choose puncture-proof tyres and suspension if you’re planning to go off the beaten track. You deserve a smooth ride, no matter the surface.
Folding and Travel Scooters: The Wild Cards
These scooters don’t sit neatly in Class 2 or 3. They're often Class 2 by legal definition, but they’re built with travel in mind — lightweight, foldable, and sometimes even airline-approved.
Where You Can Use Them:
✔ Indoors and pavements
✔ Holiday resorts, airports, cruise ships
✔ Occasional, short-distance outdoor use
Best For: Adventurers, weekend warriors, and those with wanderlust.
The 3Scooter fits here too, thanks to its removable battery and easy fold mechanism. The 3Scooter fits in the back of most small cars, like a Renault Zoe for example, and is lightweight (15kg lifting weight with seat and battery removed).
Whether you're jetting off on holiday or heading to a festival, these scooters pack down small and travel light. Just be mindful — their size means they might not handle rough terrain or steep hills as well as larger models.
Supersmith Tip: Battery type and weight limits vary! The battery on a 3Scooter is roughly the size of a water bottle. It’s easy to charge on the go or take a spare for longer journeys.
How to Choose the Right Scooter for You
Ask yourself:
- Where do I most often travel — pavement, road, indoors or countryside?
- Do I need something portable or permanently ready to go?
- Am I travelling long distances or just nipping to the corner shop?
- What kind of terrain am I dealing with — cobbles, gravel or smooth paths?
We believe that mobility is about more than getting from A to B — it’s about doing it on your terms, in comfort and style!
